Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth announces In the Making

Ahead of the 25th anniversary of Tadao Ando’s building in December 2027, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth announces In the Making, an exhibition and series of programs beginning in fall 2026. This initiative offers a moment to reflect and look ahead. Fort Worth has grown remarkably over the past quarter-century; the Modern is well-positioned to ask how it can continue to grow alongside this dynamic city and best serve the surrounding community. In the Making will shape the Modern’s exhibitions, programming and engagement in the year ahead. This is a time for us all to reflect, ask questions and imagine what the museum can become.

Director Halona Norton-Westbrook comments, “The heart of this idea is simple: Leading up to our twenty-fifth anniversary, we are looking back to celebrate the past while looking forward to our future. Ando gave this city a building designed to help us slow down and focus our attention—an arbor for art that you can always come back to. Our job between now and December 2027 is to build on that vision in this fast-changing world.”

First initiatives

October 2026: In the Making: The Sculpture Project

In the Making: The Sculpture Project is a free educational program throughout October 2026. Beginning Oct. 1, the Modern’s lobby becomes a studio space where visitors of all ages can build and create their own sculptures, guided by the education team and inspired by the museum’s collection. The Sculpture Project is open to everyone who wants to participate. All materials are provided, and all experience levels are welcome. Fall through summer: In the Making: Stories from the Collection

In the Making: Stories from the Collection (Oct. 31, 2026–Aug. 15, 2027) is an exhibition exploring modern and contemporary art through the lens of the Modern’s collection. The evolving exhibition will feature 10 stories that unfold over the course of its run, tracing formal and conceptual themes of the past 80 years, including how artists use color, mark-making, materials, the figure and inspiration from the land. New opportunities to discover, consider and understand works from the collection invite visitors to contemplate how meaning can change over time, and how art is always in the making.

Friday, Oct. 30, 7–10 p.m.
Free admission; reservations requested.

Explore the exhibition, speak with “Ask Me” docents, and enjoy spinning, dancing and other artful antics with the DJ in the lobby. Wear an art-inspired costume and show it off on the dance floor.

Gallery hours: Tuesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Friday until 8 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays and holidays, including New Year’s Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas.

Admission: Free for all visitors in October 2026. Otherwise, general admission is $16 for adults, $12 for seniors, active or retired military personnel and first responders with ID, and $10 for students with ID. Admission is free for visitors under 18. Tickets are half-price on Sundays and free on Fridays.
